Nurturing Father's Program (NFP)

An Effective Practice

Description

The presence of a nurturing father is crucial for healthy child and adolescent development and overall well-being. The Nurturing Father's Program (NFP) is an evidence-based, 13-week parenting curriculum for men. Each class is 2.5 hours and teaches effective skills for healthy family relationships and child development. The curriculum is also taught in Spanish.

Goal / Mission

The goal of the Nurturing Fathers Program is to teach men parenting and nurturing skills.

Impact

Thousands of fathers have benefited from the Nurturing Fathers Program. The program has been successfully implemented by non-profit organizations as well as federal, state, and municipal government entities.

Results / Accomplishments

The Nurturing Father’s Program was effective in changing participants' parental attitudes and behaviors as measured by the Adult Adolescent Parenting Inventory 2 (AAPI-2). A study comparing pretest and posttest AAPI-2 scores revealed improvements in the fathers' understanding of their children's developmental capabilities, ability to demonstrate empathy, reported use of alternate strategies to corporal punishment, understanding of the needs of self and children, and in the value placed on children feeling empowered. Another pre-post test study suggested that Hispanic fathers especially benefit from the program compared to African-Americans and Whites, particularly in appropriate expectations, empathy, and role reversal. The program has demonstrated potential for cross cultural use with White, Hispanic, and African-American participants.
