New York State Smokers' Quitline

An Evidence-Based Practice

Description

New York State residents who desire to quit smoking can receive support services by calling the New York State Smokers' Quitline (1-866-NY-QUITS) or requesting support online at www.nysmokefree.com. The quitline offers telephone coaching in English and Spanish as well as free nicotine replacement therapy for eligible smokers. Because most quitters go back to smoking within three months of quitting, smokers are eligible for enrollment twice a year with a minimum of three months between enrollments.

Goal / Mission

The New York State Smokers' Quitline is a free and confidential service that provides effective stop smoking services to New Yorkers who want to stop smoking.

Results / Accomplishments

In an evaluation of 34,090 eligible smokers who participated in the program, the smoking statuses of 1,305 randomly sampled participants were compared to those of eligible smokers who did not participate due to mailing errors. The participants, who were each given a 6-week course of nicotine patches, had a 33% success rate at smoking cessation six months after enrollment. The percent of participants who successfully quit was significantly higher than for non-participants (6%, p<0.0001). At least 6,038 successful quits were attributable to nicotine replacement therapy, and the cost per quit was $464.
