CareMore: Nonemergency Medical Transport

An Effective Practice

Description

Transportation is a barrier to healthcare services in rural, urban, elderly, and low-income populations. Forgoing medical treatment due to access can cause an exacerbation of the illness. State Medicaid programs are required by federal regulations to provide nonemergency medical transport (NEMT) to qualifying beneficiaries. In 2016, CareMore launched a three-month, self-funded rideshare pilot program with Lyft.

Goal / Mission

To provide transportation and improve patient satisfaction for nonemergency medical services.

Impact

CareMore's NEMT was so successful in the first 3 months, the programs were expanded in California, Nevada, Arizona, and Virginia.

Results / Accomplishments

Wait times for transportation decreased from 12.5 to 8.8 minutes, additionally, costs per ride decreased from $31.5 to $21.3 per ride, and patient satisfaction increased.
